Ozzy Osbourne is an English heavy metal vocalist from Marston Green, Warwickshire. After he was fired from Black Sabbath early in 1979, Osbourne formed a solo band (initially known as Blizzard of Ozz) in November of that year with guitarist Randy Rhoads, bassist Bob Daisley and drummer Lee Kerslake. After temporarily quitting the band in 1978, he’d kicked around the idea of a band called Blizzard Of Ozz, but it came to nothing. The history of the Ozzy Osbourne band is best understood as a series of distinct musical eras, each defined and architected by its lead guitarist. While Osbourne’s vocals provided a constant, iconic presence, the guitarist role was that of a primary co-writer and sonic visionary, fundamentally reshaping the band’s sound with each new arrival. From 1983 to 1987, guitarist Jake E. But for Gary Hoey’s journey from jazz student to auditioning for Ozzy Osbourne’s band is a tale of seizing opportunities. “I did an audition for Ozzy, which was the reason why I ended up going out to California,” Hoey stated, recounting how he got his chance after Ozzy visited Boston and called out on WBCN radio for guitar demos.
